Sending your Resume Using the Internet
Hundreds of large companies - Sony Corp., Coca Cola Co., International Business Machines Corp., Paine Webber, Nations Bank Corp., Avis Rent A Car Inc., Microsoft Corp., Pfizer Inc., Shell Oil Co., and Staples Inc., to name a few- use types of text-search or artificial-intelligence software to track resumes. Here are some tips for your scanable resume:
| · |
Use technical/descriptive words that reflect the key skills in your target industry (guess which words the computer will be scanning for). |
| · |
Mimic the words in the "help wanted" ad. Avoid bullets, underlining, bold and italics. Do not use double columns. |
| · |
Use white paper only. |
| · |
Do not worry if your scanable resume is not graphically appealing. Usually, no human eyes will ever see it. |
| · |
Have another resume that is graphically appealing ready for the interview. |
Take heart, your resume really will stay on file for a longer period of time and you may get a surprise call for an interview long after you've given up.
